Severna Park CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and typically considered a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum triggers lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or rise of the pelvis. (5) Various bridge-type exercises are being studied about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s two layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and stop back pain. (6) Back And Neck Care Center and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Severna Park chiropractic visit to Back And Neck Care Center.
